On the Special Edition discs you can actually view the crawl without the 'A New Hope' title. I always thought of Star Wars as a stand alone film and whilst Empire and Jedi were nice - the original for me is still the best. It didn't exist back in 1977 and only came into play on re-issue (cinema/home video/television) when the sequels arrived. I would lose the 'A New Hope' title from the crawl. Would I change anything if I had the equipment?

Star Wars Revisited looks like a film released a few years ago, rather than 30+ years ago.Įvery credit to Lucas for having a go, and the chap who did 'revisited' for correcting the errors and moving the film up another notch. Viewing the films side by side has opened my eyes immensely. The revisited edition takes me back to being 7 years old, sat transfixed with my Dad at the Odeon cinema, Blackpool. The old LD version now reminds me of watching the film on television in the early 80's. This is the version I will sit down and view with my 2 year old son when he is a little older. The new additions from Lucas, combined with the corrections we all wanted in the revisited edition now give us the definitive version of Star Wars. I love the amount of detail in the picture (and how I wish this was in HD for added effect). I'm actually at a point now where I would view the revisited edition over any other - even my old LD's and VHS recordings.įirst of all - the print is so clean now. Running them side by side just shows how fantastic the new versions are - especially the revisited version correcting such errors as 'Han shoots second' and the whole 'Jabba' piece in the hangar. I feel that most people - 'purists' as they like to be known tend to look at the '77 print with rose tinted spectacles.

I appreciate that Lucas made a lot of these changes with the special editions he did for DVD, but that plus the new additions in the 'revisited' edition are now nothing short of stunning. I have to say, the differences are actually quite astronomical. Spent a fair bit of time tonight running this new version against the old LaserDisc version that I now have on DVD - splitting the screen on my mac. Would love this version in a HD release though, I think the guy that put it together has some brilliant ideas - ideas that Lucas should look at should he ever release the 'HD Special Special no really it's the most Special Edition' Thought the 'Biggs, Biggs' screams from Luke through the radio (taken from the radio play) was a fantastic addition and seamlessly fit the scene.Ībsolutely loved the Death Star just about to fire at the end (the green lasers start to come together) then BOOM! Also the new holographic display in the 'war room' and the new schematics on the Death Star from R2. Some scenes were repeated to extend the fight (and other parts) too - and I noticed right away that 'I had just seen that' etc. Loved the final battle, not sure about the music behind the Vader/Obi Wan fight. I prefer the regular release of course from '77, but this is a close second. For the most part it's an improvement on the Special Edition releases.
